The ARCH on International Avenue stands for Arts, Recreation, and Community Hub. The ARCH connects, empowers and enriches community through arts and culture, facilitating community-building, collaborations, and creative play. Through our activities, we celebrate and support the rich ethno-cultural diversity that thrives in Calgary’s Greater Forest Lawn (GFL) communities.
ARCH Vision and Partnership
ARCH on International Avenue was born out of an in-depth study commissioned by the International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) identifying the need for a space to serve the culturally diverse communities of the Greater Forest Lawn area and beyond. In addition, Calgary Arts Development (CADA) completed a citywide study, which also noted this lack of performance space in Calgary’s eastern quadrants. Our plan is to meet that need, while creating space(s) for community and cultural programs and services, art and recreation.
To date, we have been supported by project funding from private funders like The Calgary Foundation, The Jaimie Hill and Tammy-Lynn Powers Memorial Foundation, the Province of Alberta, Calgary Arts Development, and the International Avenue BRZ.
We are actively seeking donations, collaborators, and partners to realize our vision.
Our model of shared leadership is one of meaning and engagement that includes individuals, community groups, businesses, other not-for-profit organizations, and funders. Some of our collaborators and supporters include:
- Calgary Centre for Global Community; empowering and engaging global citizens to envision and create thriving, healthy and just communities here and around the world;
- ArtBOX, (currently on hold) was a creative play space on 17E for artists, youth and social activists to express their creativity and uniqueness;
- Ethnocultural Council of Calgary, who have a passion to build capacity and serve the needs of their membership of over 50 ethnocultural organizations in Calgary;
- The United Way of Calgary, who is keen to build community capacity and connectivity in all the communities it serves.
Location for the ARCH on International Avenue
The City of Calgary has generously given IAACC access to a piece of land on the south west corner of 17th Avenue and 26th Street SE. This location serves as a welcoming gateway to International Avenue and Greater Forest Lawn. It is a picturesque, largely untouched oasis overlooking the Bow River, located in close proximity to the vibrant bustle of International Avenue.
The site commands a spectacular view of downtown Calgary and the mountains and is easily accessed via Deerfoot Trail, bike path, or transit from International Avenue.
